Switzerland finishes fifth in the Women's Hockey World Cup – plays in Group A for the next World Cup

Switzerland retains its place in Group A for next year's World Cup in the Czech Republic. This is clear after Alina Müller became the hero of the match in the placement match against Germany.

On Saturday, a placement match in the Women's World Cup 2024 was played in the USA. Switzerland and Germany clashed in the battle for fifth place where a place in Group A for next year's World Cup was at stake. Group A, or Group A, is the best-ranked group in the women's WC tournament and if you play there, you are guaranteed a quarter-final place for the current championship. Switzerland belonged to Group A for this year's WC, while Germany played in Group B together with Sweden. After a quarter-final loss each, the countries were ranked best (5th and 6th) after the group stage and therefore had to play for fifth place.

The placement match was won by Switzerland. After an exciting and even match, Switzerland took the lead at the end of the first period. In the second period, Germany equalized at 1-1 before Switzerland regained the lead through Lara Stalder soon after. Germany equalized before the period break and the match was 2-2 going into the third period, a third period that was goalless. The match went to extra time where Switzerland drew the longest straw when star Alina Müller made it 3-2 to become the hero of the match for her country.

Germany came so close to climbing up Group A but Switzerland instead keep their place in Group A after the 3-2 win. This means that Group A is intact for next year's WC with Switzerland, the USA, Canada, Finland and the Czech Republic.
